Children's National Medical Center appointed Marshall L. Summar, MD, as the first Margaret O'Malley Professor of Genetic Medicine. Dr. Summar joins Children's National as the division chief of genetics and metabolism and is internationally known for his pioneering work in caring for children diagnosed with rare diseases, including urea cycle and related disorders.

On April 9, sponsors of the annual Credit Union Cherry Blossom Ten Mile Run presented a check for $923,000 to Children's Miracle Network (CMN). As the local CMN hospital, Children's National played host to the event. The credit unions also held a play day with patients at the hospital, where they decorated piggy banks with Children's National patients. On April 7, 2010, Mary Schmidt Amons presented a check for $25,000 to Dr. Richard Jonas to support the Center for Heart, Lung, and Kidney Disease at Children's National. The donation represented the proceeds from Modus Union 2010, a fashion show Amons produced on Jan. 16 at the Mayflower Hotel.

His Excellency Shaves His Head to Raise Money for Cancer
On Jan. 8, 2010, His Excellency Yousef Al Otaiba, the ambassador from the United Arab Emirates to the United States, shaved his head to raise money for the cancer programs at Children's National Medical Center. As part of the Be Brave & Shave initiative, launched this year, the ambassador raised $275,000 and generously matched that amount, bringing the total to $550,000 to benefit children with cancer.

On October 19,2009, Costco Wholesale associates from all over the metro area presented Children's National Medical Center with a $753,587 donation, increasing the company's total giving to nearly $4 million. On Sept. 16, 2009, Children's National Medical Center announced the creation of the Sheikh Zayed Institute for Pediatric Surgical Innovation, with a goal of improving surgical outcomes for children everywhere. The institute was made possible by a $150 million gift from the government of of Abu Dhabi, the largest gift ever made for pediatric surgery.

President Obama met with pediatric leaders from Children's National Medical Center to discuss health care reform on July 20, 2009. The visit focused on the unique needs of children and the challenges of ensuring quality healthcare for all children. Topics discussed ranged from improving access to care to the unique challenges of employing new technologies, like electronic medical records, in a pediatric setting.

Dr. Anthony Sandler Named to the Diane & Norman Bernstein Professorship in Pediatric Surgery at Children's National
Children's National Medical Center has appointed Dr. Anthony Sandler as the Diane and Norman Bernstein Professor in Pediatric Surgery. It is Children's first-ever endowed professorship in the Joseph E. Robert, Jr. Center for Surgical Care. Sandler is chief for general and thoracic surgery, and is a funded researcher in cancer vaccines.

Kohl's & Children's National Team Up to Celebrate World Asthma Day

In celebration of World Asthma Day, the Kohl's Community Asthma Program at Children's National Medical Center is organizing asthma education and outreach to area youth throughout the week, including participation in the Asthma Screening & Health Expo and Asthma Awareness Day Capitol Hill. The Kohl's Community Asthma Program will also be conducting school-based outreach at several District of Columbia public and charter schools

Employees and friends of Children's National Medical Center helped make Race for Hope on May 3, 2009, a big success. In spite of the rain, the 5K walk/run attracted nearly 10,000 participants and raised $1,742,100 for brain tumor research.
