New Surgery Institute at Children’s National Medical Center Aims to Improve Surgery and Eliminate Pain

Announcement of InstituteOn Sept. 16, 2009, Children’s National Medical Center announced the creation of the Sheikh Zayed Institute for Pediatric Surgical Innovation, with a goal of improving surgical outcomes for children everywhere.  The institute was made possible by a $150 million gift from the government of of Abu Dhabi, the largest gift ever made for pediatric surgery.

In an announcement at the hospital, Edwin K. Zechman, Jr, president and chief executive officer at Children’s National said, "This gift will enhance our mission to transform children's health for all children, not just the ones who come to this hospital."

Despite tremendous medical advances over the past few decades, surgery is often imprecise, invasive, and painful for children.  By making pediatric care more precise, less invasive, and less painful, the Institute will improve the lives of children everywhere.
