Kohl's & Children's National Team Up to Celebrate World Asthma Day

doctor with asthma patientIn celebration of World Asthma Day, the Kohl's Community Asthma Program at Children's National Medical Center is organizing asthma education and outreach to area youth throughout the week, including participation in the Asthma Screening & Health Expo and Asthma Awareness Day Capitol Hill. The Kohl's Community Asthma Program will also be conducting school-based outreach at several District of Columbia public and charter schools.

World Asthma Day is an event organized by DC Asthma Partnership and the American Lung Association to educate Washington, DC youth to recognize the symptoms and triggers of asthma and to learn asthma management skills, including how to help someone having an asthma attack.

The Kohl's Community Asthma Program provides expansive asthma prevention education to high-risk children and families in the metropolitan DC region. The program includes educational brochures and other materials, one-on-one and group educational sessions, community and school-based health fairs, media spots on local radio stations, and ads in community newspapers. The program focuses on helping families to identify the signs and symptoms of asthma, carrying out effective treatment through the proper user of controller medications, and controlling environmental risk factors that contribute to chronic asthma symptoms.

Kohl's has been raising funds for the hospital since 1997.  Their efforts have contributed more than $3 million to Children’s National’s Mobile Clinic Program, PICU, and other critical areas.
