Children's National Races for Hope to Fight Brain Tumors
Employees and friends of Children’s National Medical Center helped make Race for Hope on May 3, 2009, a big success. In spite of the rain, the 5K walk/run attracted nearly 10,000 participants and raised $1,742,100 for brain tumor research.
The Children's National team, "Dr. Bear's Brain Tumor Busters," raised $57,374, ranking fourth among the 376 other teams. Dr. Bear’s Brain Tumor Busters had more than 100 team members, including Dr. Roger Packer, Dr. Brian Rood, Dr. Robert Keating, Debbie LaFond (Nurse Practitioner-Hematology/Oncology), as well as past and current patient families.
Now in its twelfth year, Race for Hope is sponsored by Cassidy & Pinkard Colliers. Proceeds from the race benefit two organizations: National Brain Tumor Society, a national not-for-profit organization that exists to find a cure and improve the quality of life for those affected by brain tumors; and Accelerate Brain Cancer Cure, a Washington, DC based not-for-profit organization with a singular focus: to hasten the discovery of a cure for brain cancer.
