Brian
Story by his mom, Sara
During Brian's 2 month checkup, his doctor noticed he was struggling to breathe and the oxygen levels in his blood were low. After visits to specialists, countless tests and procedures, he was diagnosed with congenital lobal emphysema which was preventing his lungs from working correctly. The pediatric pulminologist directed us to Dr. Phillip Guzzetta at Children’s National Medical Center both as a second opinion and a recommended surgeon.
Upon meeting Dr. Guzzetta we were instantly put at ease. He explained that one of the lobes of Brian’s lung was hyperinflated, which was affecting his entire lung capacity. He recommended surgery to remove Brian's upper left lobe once he turned 3 months.
Handing my infant son over to the surgery team was the most difficult thing I have ever done but I am happy to report that it was a success. Even though Brian is missing part of his lung, Dr. Guzzetta explained that his natural growth pattern will fill that space.
Brian is now a very happy, active and vocal 2 1/2 year old. If it weren't for the 3 little incisions you would never know what he had gone through.
Thank you Dr. Guzzetta and Children's.
