Mikael
Story by his mom, Marta
Children’s National Medical Center became involved with my son Mikael two months before his birth. Once he was diagnosed with hydrocephalus, the genetic, neurology, and cardiology departments went into action to assess his condition and devise a plan for Mikael’s arrival. As his brain slightly improved, they ruled out the need for brain surgery; however, it was still abnormal in size. Children’s actively advised and coordinated with our community hospital and my obstetrician.
After his birth, Mikael was diagnosed with cerebral dysgenesis. We were uncertain what this meant for our son, because there were no studies as to how this particular lack of brain development affects humans. My deep conviction is that the early identification and intervention provided by Children’s was crucial to Mikael’s survival. The medical expertise available to Mikael through Children’s gave him an opportunity previously unavailable. I thank God daily for the medical knowledge we were given, and that we are brought together as a community to tackle these medical obstacles that are so overwhelming to a family.
Mikael will turn 3 years old on Mar. 17, 2009. While we are still uncertain of the neurological effects of the cerebral digenesis, our neurologist at Children’s has been able to control Mikael’s seizures. During his first year, Mikael was in the hospital 24 times. The following year, he was in three times, and he has not been hospitalized since April 2008. As a result, Mikael has been able to progress beautifully—delayed, but pushing forward—in his development. Children’s has taught me exactly what I can do to help Mikael and to be incredibly well-informed and knowledgeable about his condition. This summer, Mikael was tested and diagnosed with visual and hearing impairments; but by controlling the seizures, his hearing has improved and there is hope that his vision can be similarly affected.
Before I went to Children’s, I was told by other experts that Mikael did not have any chance of survival. They were wrong! Mikael has been the most incredible miracle that I have ever witnessed.
I credit Mikael’s miraculous healing to God. I believe that through His grace, we have been given the best, most-knowledgeable doctors and incredible facilities.
I hope that through God’s grace, you will be moved to donate to Children’s. Every dollar you donate is used to help a child, and every penny you give is at work 24/7. We, the families of Children’s patients, are so grateful for the generosity of everyone who donates.
