What to Know About Summer Safety

Tips for summer safetyIt’s time to head outdoors and enjoy the dog days of summer! But with summer fun come special safety concerns.  How do you keep a bee sting from getting worse? How do you know when your child needs medical attention after a spill from his bike?  Is that bug bite just itchy or something to be concerned about?

Dr. Lee Beers of Children’s National provides tips on how to avoid—and treat—some of summer’s most common dangers.

Washington Caps Score for Children's National

Mike Green visits with patients at Children's NationalWhether they were on or off the ice, Washington Capitals goalie Jose Theodore and defenseman Mike Green were working to support Children's National this season. In early May, the players presented checks totaling nearly $100,000 to support patients and families.

Through Theodore's "Saves for Kids""program, he donated $2 for every save, $100 for every win, and $500 for every shutout. Mike Green donated $100 for every goal he scored and $50 for each assist as part of his "So Kids Can" charity, partnering with DC101's Elliot Segal. Each player also received support from Washington Capitals Charities, fans, and area businesses.

Ian's Story

Ian at the hospital"Our lives changed dramatically when our son Ian was flown by helicopter from our local emergency room to Children's National. We were given a diagnosis of severe coarcation of the aorta. Our little boy was extremely ill, and not yet strong enough to undergo surgery. But along with this frightening diagnosis, we were also given hope."
